Khatyn Memorial.

Khatyn Memorial is a tribute to the memory of those who died during the Great Patriotic War. It is a symbol of a terrible tragedy and a testament to the courage of the people. Together with VETLIVA, we will tell you why it is worth visiting.

Khatyn tragedy

The village of Khatyn existed until 1943. Once Belarusian partisans fired at a German convoy and killed its officer. The Nazis took revenge and burned the locals alive. Some of them tried to run away but were shot. 149 people, including 75 children, died.

Only the blacksmith could survive. He carried his wounded son in his arms but couldn’t save him. The 6-meter high bronze sculpture “The Unconquered’’ is dedicated to this event.

The memorial complex

The memorial complex was opened in 1969. It repeats the layout of the destroyed village. There is an obelisk in the form of a chimney with a bell instead of every destroyed house. The names of the burned people are written on each of them. The bells ring every hour. The memorial complex has become the embodiment of grief for the victims.

There is a wall of sorrow nearby. It looks like a memorial plaque with the names of the death camps. The memorial complex also includes the Memory Square where 3 birches grow and the Eternal Flame burns. There is a cemetery of villages on the territory. The graves symbolize the burnt Belarusian villages.

The Brest Fortress, the Mound of Glory, and the Buinichi Field are places that everyone should see. Some of them you can visit during sightseeing tours.
