The construction of the castle began in the 16th century. The famous Italian architect Giovanni Bernardoni was invited here. The monumental building was decorated with stucco, sculptures, and relief decorations. The castle looked monumental and romantic. There was a two-story annex with a terrace and towers in the central part.

The War of 1812 brought the castle into decay. Many masterpieces and 12 sculptures of the apostles made of gold and silver, were stolen. The castle restoration began in the second half of the 19th century. The castle complex was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005.
